Everything to Know About Oil Pulling With Olive Oil
What Is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is a dental hygiene routine that has been practiced primarily in Ayurvedic medicine in India and South East Asia for thousands of years to improve oral health. It's believed that the oil removes the bacteria and toxins from your mouth for a deep clean—naturally whitening teeth, improving bad breath, and preventing cavities and gum disease.
One study even found that oil pulling was as successful as chlorhexidine (a prescription mouthwash) at decreasing Streptococcus mutans—aka the bacteria that is believed to cause tooth decay.
Can You Oil Pull With Olive Oil?
Yup! Oil pulling is typically done with olive, coconut, or sesame oils. All have their benefits, but extra virgin olive oil has been found to be particularly beneficial for oil pulling due to its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which make it a natural virus and bacteria killer.
How To Oil Pull:
It's simple! Just squeeze a tablespoon's worth of Drizzle (or start slow and work your way up if a mouthful of oil is daunting) onto your tongue and swish it around the same way that you would with mouthwash. Continue the process of swishing, working it between your teeth and around your tongue, for at least five minutes. (Some people do up to 20 minutes! Pick what's right for you.) Then spit out your oil into a trashcan—not down your drain!
Follow up your oil pulling by brushing your teeth and rinsing as you would normally, and go on with your day with a brighter smile (and breath)!
